For many years, Louie and I have dreamed of improving the lives of children who are marginalized by society. We envision a world in which all children are given the opportunity to be loved, cared for, empowered, and inspired to create change. We believe that each and every child is born with the potential to change the world.
At 5 weeks old, Louie was adopted from a Guatemalan orphanage by American parents, which profoundly and permanently impacted his life. In turn, we adopted our daughter Mia, a child who is such a precious gift to our family.
During a trip to India in 2018, we spent a week at one of Asia’s Hope homes. We experienced, first-hand, the transformation that takes place when 20 orphaned children, whose lives would otherwise be brutal, unjust, and all too often, unfairly short, are placed in a family with a Mother and Father. We immediately realized that we must participate in expanding this kind of transformative love beyond our own family. Witnessing what they experienced daily proved to be a heartbreaking yet powerful motivator.
After that trip, Louie and I decided to partner with Asia Hope.
We will be building a home, a place of hope and healing, in Chiang Rai, Thailand, for 22 orphaned Hill Tribe children. This home will provide the children with a permanent home with two full time parents and two helpers (think the Brady Bunch, in Thailand!).
I have always dreamt of doing something that brings the design community and everyone around us together to be part of something that will change the world. This endeavor has made me dig deep into what I believe. As John McCollum from Asia’s Hope told me, “If it’s not scary, then your dream is not big enough”. To be a courageous leader means you have to be willing to conquer the fear that comes with doing great things. Well, the last few months have pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am learning to live with what it means to be comfortable in the uncomfortable.
For all who join us as partners to create this home, this will be a chance to lead courageously, build something of eternal significance and create lasting change in the world.
In November, we kicked off our Asia’s Hope house project with a Modern Prohibition party. This all started as a suggestion from a friend to host a guys’ bourbon night. Well, like most things in my life, I wanted to take it to another level. (Plus, I needed an excuse so women could show up too!) Our goal: raise $150,000, the seed money needed to begin the building phase of the Asia’s Hope Chiang Rai home.
The evening was one of the best nights of my life. I was blown away by the support of our vendors, clients, friends, and even strangers, who all came together to make this evening a success. Through everyone’s support, we have already raised close to $109,000, so far.
If you couldn’t make it to the party, check out what you missed in our video (below) and stay tuned to see what we do together in 2019!!!
In the meantime, we would be honored if you would partner with us on this journey of creating a home for 20 children in need by donating!
